Luke Rivers, South Carolina to Mississippi

Luke Rivers[1] was born about 1810 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He is a son of Mark Rivers and Annie Parker. He and his family were enumerated in the 1850 Census for Chesterfield County, South Carolina.[2]  He and his family were listed in the 1860, in the 1870 Census [3] Mary is with her daughter Elizabeth and in 1880; both Luke and Mary S. are listed in the Census for Jones county, Mississippi..[4][5] Luke owned 117.18 acres purchased on 10 Apr 1862 in Jones County, Mississippi.[6] Luke died after 1880 at the age of 70+ in Jones County, Mississippi.
Luke Rivers and Mary Selina John were married in 1841 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Mary Selina John was born in 1828 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Mary is living with her daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law, John Holifield in the 1900 census. She died after 1900 at the age of 72+ in Jones County, Mississippi.

Luke Rivers and Mary Selina John had the following children:

           +2              i.   Flavelia Clarilla Levinia Rivers, born 1840, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married John Madison Musgrove, abt 1858; died 1 Jun 1896, Laurel, Jones County, Mississippi.
           +3             ii.   Nancy Elizabeth Rivers, born abt 1845, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Moses Holifield Jr., abt 1860, Jones County, Mississippi; married John J. Holifield, abt 1871, Jones County, Mississippi; died 26 Mar 1913, Jones County, Mississippi.
           +4            iii.   Sarah Catharine Rivers, born 1845, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married James M. Holifield, abt 1862, Jones County, Mississippi; died 1884.
           +5            iv.   John C. Rivers, born 1848, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Elizabeth Holifield, abt 1870, MS; married Amanda J. Hill, 21 May 1895, Jones County, Mississippi.


Luke and Mary S. Rivers migrated from Chesterfield County, South Carolina to Jones County, Mississippi sometime between 1850 and 1860. His brother Mark Rivers and a sister, Amelia or Emily Rivers Holifield were already in Mississippi. Amelia "Milly" Rivers was married to Moses Holifield and they are listed in the 1840 tax rolls for Jones County, Mississippi. They are also listed in the 1830 Census for Chesterfield County, SC.


Moses Holifield, Jr., son of Moses & Milly married Luke and Mary's daughter Nancy Elizabeth about 1860 in Jones County, Mississippi. Clarilla married John Madison Musgrove; he was a witness at Mark Rivers and Arena Catherine Hancock Rivers divorce trial in 1859.

James M. Holifield who married Sarah Catherine Rivers, daughter of Luke Rivers is the grandson of Moses & "Milly" Holifield (Luke's sister).

  1. Thank you very much for this post. I'm researching a friend's family tree. Things were not adding up. John J. Holifield was to young to be the father of Elizabeth's children! I begin to suspect Elizabeth was perhaps married to a brother of John. I appreciate your post and thank you so much.
