Sunday's Obituary–William Alfred Rivers

Mr. W.A. Rivers, of Mt. Croghan, died at his home Wednesday night, December 27th, at about 8 o'clock. Mr. Rivers had been in failing health for some time and had spent much time in the mountains at Asheville, NC, having returned only three weeks before his death. He was in his 47 year, was a steward in the Methodist church, a director in the Bank of Ruby and Mt. Croghan and head of the firm of Rivers Bros. He was the son of Mr. J.K. Rivers and besides two brothers, J.H. and Norman Rivers, leaves a wife and nine children. He had a wide circle of relatives and friends who are deeply grieved at his death. He was a Mason and was buried according to the rites of that order, Dr. T.E. Wannamaker, of Cheraw, officiating. In all of Mr. Rivers' business dealings he won the reputation for scrupulous honesty in word and deed. With the passing of Mr. Rivers Chesterfield county loses an exceptionally good and useful citizen.

William A. Rivers married Mary Roxanna :Minnie’ Burch about 1897. They ten (10) children but only nine were living at the time of their Father death in December 1916. Their daughter, Lucy Henrietta Rivers, was born on Sept. 21, 1908 and died on Mar 7, 1909. Little Henrietta is also buried at Antioch Methodist Church Cemetery.

* Note: William A. Rivers death certificate shows his middle name as Albert. I have been told by family member and I quote ” William Alfred Rivers not Albert as propagated in genealogies for the past 50 years”.
