52 Ancestors: #39, Mary Ann Sellers Ryan

clip_image001

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story To Small has started a challenge of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.
From her blog “The challenge: have one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor. It could be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem — anything that focuses on one ancestor. Not only should this get me blogging more, but also to take a deeper look at some of the people in my family tree.”

The focus of my blog post today is Mary Ann Sellers Ryan.

Before this past week very little research had taken place on Mary Sellers. What was known about Mary was documents in a book entitled “Some Descendants of Hardy Sellers of Chesterfield County, SC” on page 8.

Mary Ann Sellers2

Mary Ann Sellers was born on 3 Mar 1818 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.1 2 3 She was a daughter of  Abraham Sellers and Ada Norwood. She died on 3 Nov 1869 at the age of 51 in Pittsboro, Calhoun, Mississippi.4 5

Mary Ann Sellers and Joseph Spencer Ryan were married on 15 Dec 1836 in Wilcox County, Alabama.6

Joseph Spencer Ryan was born on 1 Aug 1808 in South Carolina. He appeared in the 1850-1880 census for Mississippi.7 8 9 Joseph died on 8 Jun 1884 at the age of 75 in Pittsboro, Calhoun, Mississippi.

Joseph Spencer Ryan and Mary Ann Sellers had the following children:
i. Zachariah Jesse Ryan was born in 1838.
ii. Mary Ryan was born in 1839. She died before 1860 at the age of 21.
iii. Sarah Dorothy Ryan, born 1841; married Robert H. Crutherds.
iv. Hosea E. Ryan was born in 1847. He died in 1881 at the age of 34.
v. John Warren Spencer Ryan was born in 1850. He died in 1919 at the age of 69.
vi. Joseph Abraham Ryan was born in 1853. He died in 1919 at the age of 66.
vii. Samuel F. Ryan was born in 1856. He died in 1913 at the age of 57.
viii. Margaret Ryan was born in 1860.
ix. Bettie Ryan, born 16 Nov 1859, Mississippi, United States; married Theophelus Pulliam Gibbs; died 2 Aug 1952, Guadalupe County, Texas, United States.

There’s still a lot of research to be done with this couple and their children and I‘m looking forward to finding out more about my cousins.

Mary Ann Sellers Ryan is my 1st cousin 5 times removed.

Stephen and Roxanna raised a family of seven children, 3 sons and 4 daughters, in Chesterfield County South Carolina. Their first born a son was born about 1840; it is believed that they were married before 1840.

Stephen proposed the question of Succession form the Union prior to the Civil War.

“the Hon. J. W. BLAKENEY, our Senator and by our Representatives Colonels MACFARLAN and PRINCE, and also by Col. S. JACKSON. At the close of Col. JACKSON’S speech he submitted the question of submission, or of resistance by immediate Secession, to a vote of the battalion; upon requesting all in favor of the latter to advance four paces, the whole battalion advanced four paces, leaving not a solitary man for submission. The course of our Senator and Representatives was unanimously and most enthusiastically endorsed.” 1

Stephen Jackson died in 1887 and was buried in the Mayesville Cemetery on the North and South Carolina State Line. This cemetery has been completely destroyed and erased over the past 127 years since Stephen was buried. Roxanna Jackson is buried in the Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery.2

Stephen Jackson is my 2nd Cousin 5 times removed.

Obituary Sunday~John Daniel Teal

J. D. Teal Obit
J. D. TEAL
Special to The State.
Chesterfield, April 9.—J. D. Teal died on Wednesday and was buried on Thursday at Pine Grove church with Masonic honors. He was in his 59th years. 1

John Daniel Teal was born 5 Dec 1852, a son of Benjamin Franklin Teal and Eliza A. Davis. He was the sixth of ten (10) children; three sisters and 6 brothers.

John married Sarah Ann “Susie” Wadsworth, daughter of Lewis H. Wadsworth and Mary Ann Freeman. They were married about 1871. The 1900 census shows that they had been married 28 years.2

This same census shows that John and Susie had 9 children, all living. They had 4 sons, James Jacob, Jerome, Robert and 5 daughters, Ida, Ada, Mary, Ella and Alice.
John Daniel died on 5 April 1911 at the age of 58. This seems quite suddenly and unexpected. His wife Susie died on 9 January 1936 at the age of 81. They both are buried at Pine Grove Church Cemetery.3

John Daniel Teal is my 2nd cousin 3 times removed.

The National Youth Administration (NYA)

While doing research this past week I was looking for Margaret Sellers. I found her in the 1940 with a list of other young ladies as roommates in the NYA home. [1]

nya list

NYA Home Listing

This home is listed on page 216B, Line 52, Household #241 with Doris LANEY as Head Mistress of the house.  Lines 53 through 80 are all young ladies housed in this home. The home is located in the Court House Township of Chesterfield County in May 1940.

This peaked my curiosity because I had never heard of the NYA or the NYA Home. My next stop was Google to find exactly what the NYA was and when it was established or existed.

NYA – National Youth Administration (NYA)
The National Youth Administration was part of President Roosevelt NEW DEAL program. It’s focus “was on providing work and education for Americans between the ages of 16 and 25.”[2]
Two programs were operated by the NYA:
  • The Works Project Program to train unemployed, out-of-school youth
  • The Student Aid Program to provide work-study training for high school, college, and graduate students.” [3]
If you care to read more about the National Youth Administration you might try these links.
If you know where this house/building  was located in The Court House Township, in Chesterfield County in May 1940 I would love to here from you.

A. G. Douglass was shot down yesterday morning, over a land dispute, while engaged in chipping a turpentine tree near his home. Mr. Douglass and the shooter, W. D. Merriman, had been engaged in a land dispute resulting in a lawsuit. Merriman shot Douglass using a double barrel shotgun loaded with  buckshot.
Sheriff J. S. White arriving on the site approximately three hours after the shooting found Douglass's body lying near the tree he was chipping.
An inquest jury was empaneled by Coroner Sellers. After deliberation the jury returned the following verdict: “That W. D. Merriman, A. B. Merriman, Burrell Merriman and Jim Pigg were present and saw the shooting and no one else saw it or knew anything about it.” 1
Sheriff J. S. White  took the three Merriman’s and Jim Pigg into custody and transported them to the Chesterfield Jail.

This incident took place in the Cole Hill township approximately 6 miles from Chesterfield.

On 10 May 1889, The News and Courier ran a follow up article on page 1, column 1  with the following headlines.

The Chesterfield Homicide.
---------------------------------------
Additional Light Thrown on the Killing of Douglass
--------------------------------------------
The Story of the Merrimans—Signs Points to an Ambush—Inconsistencies Between the Statement of the Merrimans and the Position of The Body—It Looks Very Much Like a Foul Murder

Then on September 1, 1889, The News and Courier ran another follow up article with the verdict.
CONVICTED OF MURDER
Phenomenal Success of the Solicitor of the Forth Circuit in Conducting a Murder Case Against A  White Man
The newspaper read "The case of W. D. Merriman, for the murder of A. G. Douglass, was concluded last night. The jury was out fifteen minutes and brought in a verdict of guilty.
W. D. Merriman, A. B. Merriman, B. M. Merriman and James Pigg were charged with the murder of A. G. Douglass on May 6, On Wednesday, September 4, the case was called, and Solicitor Johnson nol prossed the case against all of the defendants except W. D. Merriman."

Nol prossed--- nolle prosequi (no-lay pro-say-kwee) n. Latin for "we shall no longer prosecute,"

Charges were dropped for everyone but W. D. Merriman who was found guilty. No follow up sentencing was found for W. D. Merriman.

52 Ancestors: #38, Fanny Belle Johns Jones

clip_image001
Amy Johnson Crow of No Story To Small has started a challenge of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.
From her blog “The challenge: have one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor. It could be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem — anything that focuses on one ancestor. Not only should this get me blogging more, but also to take a deeper look at some of the people in my family tree.”

The focus of my blog post today is Fanny Belle Johns Jones, my Grand Aunt.

Fanny Belle Johns was born on 12 Apr 1892 in Marlboro County, South Carolina.1 2 3 4 5 6 Fanny Belle was the daughter of Joseph Henry Johns and his wife Laura Driggers.

Fanny Belle Johns and Julius Jones were married on 12 Nov 1912 in Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina. No clues has been found to suggest a time period for the death of Fanny Belle. I know she is listed in the 1920 census for Marlboro county. In 1930, if I have the right Julius Jones, children matches, but the wife listed in the 1930 Census is Mary F. Jones. This indicates that Fanny Belle died sometime between 1920 and 1930. No obituary or death certificate has been found for her.

Julius Jones7 was born on 9 Feb 1893 in Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina. He appeared in the census in 1920 & 1930 for Marlboro County, South Carolina.8 9 It is not known when he died but it’s possible that the Julius Jones who died in Jul 1970 is this Julius Jones. Death certificate for this time period are restricted in South Carolina and newspapers are not readily accessible.

More research is needed to determine both Julius and Fanny Belle’s death date.

Julius Jones and Fanny Belle Johns had the following children:
i. Fronnie Jones, born abt 1913, Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina; married Raymond Roscoe; died 6 May 1951, Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina.
ii. Arthur T. Jones was born about 1915 in Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina. 10 11 No further information found.
iii. Evans Jones was born on 27 Jan 1917 in Smithville, Marlboro, South Carolina. He died  and was buried on 21 Mar 1917 at the age of 0 in Smithville, Marlboro, South Carolina.
iv. Willie Jones was born on 5 Dec 1918 in Smithville, Marlboro, South Carolina. He died on 5 Dec 1918 and was buried on 6 Dec 1918 in Smithville, Marlboro, South Carolina.
v. Catherine Jones was born about 1921 in Blenheim, Marlboro, South Carolina.12 No further information found.

Fanny Bell has a sister called  Annie Belle and these two women have been a real pain to find information about their lives.
