52 Ancestors: #41, Mary Catherine “Mamie” Brock Johns

P019

Mary Catherine “Mamie” Brock Johns was my Grandmother. I never knew her, but my mother had a lot of wonderful things to say about Grandma. She died on 17 June 1938 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Mama also said she died in Dr. William Perry’s office yet there is no known death certificate or obituary that has been found for her. Mama also said she died 1 year, 1 month and 1 day after her husband, Julius Johns was ran over and killed on the outskirts of Chesterfield.

Mamie was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Brock, Sr. and Louise Ellen Sellers. She was one of sibling; three brothers, Charles Riley, John Hezekiah, Benjamin Franklin, Jr. and one sister, Sarah Annie Brock.

Mamie and Julius were married 16 June 1912 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. They had eight children, one of which died after 1 month. No name has been found for this child.

The May 1936 and June 1937 death of Julius and Mamie left a family of seven without parents. Two of the three oldest were of legal age and the third  was just shy of the age of majority. Four of the children were legally considered minors. These four were raised and cared for by their oldest sister.
Mamie was buried along side of her husband in the Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.

“Rest in Peace, Grandma”
