52 Ancestors: #48, William A. Purvis

52ancestors

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story To Small has started a challenge of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.

From her blog “The challenge: have one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor. It could be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem — anything that focuses on one ancestor. Not only should this get me blogging more, but also to take a deeper look at some of the people in my family tree.”

The focus of my blog post today is William A. Purvis, my 2nd Great Grandfather.

In January 2012, I started his blog with the intent to network with other researchers in our genealogical search. At that time William A. Purvis, my paternal 2nd Great Grandfather was a genealogical brick wall and had been for the past 36 years.

In my very first posting I provided a detailed timeline of William’s life from the his first appearance in 1860, Anson County, North Carolina until his death between 23 September 1899 and May 1900. That posting can be read here:

http://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2012/01/my-brickwall-william-purvis.html

On 19 November 2012, I followed up with an article entitled Parents of William A. Purvis which can be accessed here:

http://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2012/11/mystery-monday-parents-of-william-purvis.html

Today the name of William’s parents still eludes my search; but DNA has proven that there is a connection to the James F. Purvis, Sr. family. James F. Purvis, Sr. is the brother of Gilbert Purvis and the two are sons of John Purvis and Sarah Johnson.

If you are a direct descendant of either Gilbert, James F. or Joseph Purvis I encourage you to participate in the autosomal DNA testing at Ancestry, FTDNA Family Finder or 23andMe. I’m specifically looking for male Purvis’ from one of these lines to participate in the Y-DNA and Family Finder testing. If interested please contact me at my Gmail address which can be found on the right side of this blog posting.

Tombstone Tuesday~Gilbert Purvis

The above monument is a cenotaph; not the grave of Gilbert Purvis.
Gilbert Purvis was born about 1754, a son of John Purvis and Sarah Johnson. He married Effica Howell before 1776.

For his service in the Revolutionary War he received several land grants; two of these were received on 15 August 1793 consisting of two tracts, one for 3,215 acres and the other consisting of 1000 acres. In total, Gilbert owned 4 tracts totaling 4815 acres.1

In March 1818, James Purvis died. Gilbert Purvis and two other men provided assets to back the Administrative Bond for Ten thousand dollar. The sum of the bond indicates that James Purvis had substantial holdings.2

The condition of the above obligation is such that if the above bound John Johnston and Gilbert Purvis administrators of the goods, chattels and credits of James Purvis deceased do make a true and perfect inventory...

I believe this death was a catalyst that’s set Gilbert and his brothers on a journey westward.

Shortly after the death of James, Gilbert and his family along with brothers Joseph and James F. Purvis and their family sold all their property in South Carolina and migrated down through Georgia to Clarke County, Alabama.

The families spent some time here purchasing land with several of the children getting married in the early 1820’s.  John Purvis died here in 1825. He is believed to be a son of Gilbert and Effica Purvis.

A Land Deed in Clark County exist between William Stringer (Grantor) to Gilbert PURVIS (Grantee), dated 25 December 1821 (Deed Book "A', Page 182-183).3

The families finally settled in Hinds, Simpson, Rankin and Smith counties of Mississippi.

A 1828 Tax list for Simpson County, Mississippi clearly shows that Gilbert and his son, Gilbert Johnson Purvis were both alive in June 1828. 4

Gilbert was not found in the 1829 Tax list nor the 1830 census. It’s almost certain that he died between June 1828 and 1829. 5

Gilbert Purvis in 1828 was an old man at least 74 years of age. Do you really believe he made his way back to South Carolina where he had no property and no families to die and be buried in the Rivers graveyard.

Census Sunday~ 38 Years, 2 Documents

Crowdsourcing, Wikipedia define crowdsourcing as:
the process of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, and especially from an online community,…” 1

Today I’m asking you, my fellow genealogist and family historian, to take a few minutes out of your busy schedule, read the story I am about to present and then see if you can add to this story.

I have been researching my family for 38 years. The first 24 years I lived in Utah and had access to the LDS Family History Library which I visited frequently. Yet I haven’t made any progress on this story.

Family tradition and folklore says that my maternal 2nd Great Grandmother is Laura Driggers. My mother also said she died very young from complication due to childbirth. My second Great Grandfather was Joseph Henry John/Johns. In 1880 Joseph Henry Johns also known as Joe Johns was single, age 31.

Joseph and his elderly father can be found in the 1880 Census for Marlboro County, South Carolina. 2

clip_image002

This same census is one of two documents that I have found that contains the name Laura Driggers. You can see that Laura is listed next door in the Household of her Grandfather Jeremiah Polston. She is a mere 10 years of age according to this census.

But, who are Laura Driggers parents? Her presence in the household of Jeremiah suggests that her Mother was a Polston, daughter of Jerimiah, and that her Father was a Driggers.
Joseph John/Johns married Laura Driggers, about 1882. Their first born a son, Walter Joseph Johns, Sr. was born 2 August 1883.

Joseph Henry Johns and Laura Driggers had the following children:
i. Walter Joseph Johns Sr., born 2 Aug 1883, Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina; married Arletha Quick, 2 Feb 1914, Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina; married Blanche Scott, 10 Aug 1927, Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina; married Ellen Grooms, 22 Aug 1933, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 31 Jan 1964, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii. Julius Johns, born 4 Mar 1887, Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina; married Mary Catherine Brock, 16 Jun 1912, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 16 May 1937, Monroe, Union, North Carolina.
iii. Annie Bell Johns, born May 1888, Marlboro, South Carolina; married Robert Roller, abt 1914; married William Ellis Boan, abt 1919; died 22 Jul 1923, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iv. Samuel Johns was born about 1890 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He appeared in the census in 1920.
v. Nellie Johns, born Jul 1891, Marlboro County, South Carolina; married George Washington Heustess, Oct 1909; died 18 Jan 1928, Columbia, Richland, South Carolina.
vi. Fanny Belle Johns, born Jul 1892, Marlboro County, South Carolina; married Julius Jones, 12 Nov 1912, Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina.
vii. Ida B Johns was born about 1893 in Marlboro County, South Carolina. She appeared in the census in 1900.
viii. Mamie Johns was born in Jul 1898 in Marlboro County, South Carolina. She died before 1910.

Laura (Driggers) Johns is not listed in the 1900 Census. This corresponds with family folklore that she died during or shortly after the birth of her daughter, Mamie Johns. A snapshot of the Census shows that Joseph married in 1882 and in 1900 he is listed as a widow with 6 children in the household. 3

clip_image003

Joseph Henry Johns never remarried and was partially paralyzed shortly before his death on 10 April 1929 in McFarland, Anson County, North Carolina.

Up until this point no document has been found that named Laura Driggers as the wife of Joseph Henry Johns. The only knowledge of the event is family folklore and only one document has been found that mentions Laura Driggers – the 1880 Marlboro County, South Carolina Census.

Child Name Death date Father Name Mother Name
Walter Joseph 31 Jan 1964 Certificate Restricted (not released by state)
Julius 16 May 1937 Joe John Not Known
Annie Bell 22 July 1923 Joseph John Blank
Samuel**
Nellie 18 January 1928 Joe Johns Laura Driggers
Fannie
Mamie Bef 1910
· ** Samuel only found in one Census the 1920 census for Marlboro County, SC

clip_image005

Laura (Driggers) Johns, age 28/29, is believed to have died at or shortly after the birth of her daughter, Mamie in 1898. Her absence from the 1900 Marlboro County census and family folklore substantiate this thought process. Only two documents (1880 Census, SC death certificate of daughter Nellie (Johns) Heustes) have been found that substantiate her existence. 4

If you have any data about Laura Driggers (1869/70-1898), granddaughter of Jeremiah Polston, please contact me through this blog.

If you have some spare time, take a look for Laura, maybe the “Genealogy Genie” will look favorable of your adventure and we can add some additional facts to timeline of Laura (Driggers) Johns.

52 Ancestors: #47, Samuel Deese

image

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story To Small has started a challenge of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.

From her blog “The challenge: have one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor. It could be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem — anything that focuses on one ancestor. Not only should this get me blogging more, but also to take a deeper look at some of the people in my family tree.”

The focus of my blog post today is Samuel Deese.

Samuel Deese was born about 1805 in Anson County, North Carolina.1 He and his family were found in the 1830-1880 Censuses for Anson County, North Carolina. 2 3 4 5 While it has not been confirmed he is thought to be the son of Stephen Deese and his wife Sarah (LNU).

Samuel Deese married and Sarah "Sallie" Hill about 1830 in Anson County, North Carolina. This date is based on the birth of their first child, Martha in 1831.

Sarah "Sallie" Hill was born about 1811 in Stanly County, North Carolina.6 7 8 Her parents are unknown, Sallie (Hill) Deese died on 6 Sep 1881 at the age of 70 in Anson County, North Carolina.

Samuel Deese and Sarah Hill had the following children:

i. Martha Deese, born abt 1831, Anson County, North Carolina; married Alex Melton; died 9 Apr 1915, Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.
ii. William Bogan Deese was born about 1837 in Anson County, North Carolina.9 He served in the military Company B, North Carolina 31st Infantry Regiment in 1861–1865. He died on 3 Sep 1863 at the age of 26 in Wilmington, North Carolina.
iii. Sarah A. Deese, born abt 1841, Stanly County, North Carolina; married Frank F. Melton, 1873; died 18 Nov 1916, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.
iv. Nancy Deese, born abt 1843,  Anson County, North Carolina; married Sam Short; died 16 May 1921, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.
v. James Hamilton Deese was born about 1845 in Anson County, North Carolina.10
vi. Henry Harrison Deese Sr., born 4 Aug 1845, Anson County, North Carolina; married Nellie Isabella Huneycutt, 1 Feb 1875, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; died 21 Jun 1913, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.
vii. John Calvin Deese, born 10 Nov 1852, Anson County, North Carolina; married Louvena Huneycutt, 9 Apr 1884, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina; Louvena died from complication at childbirth on 16 October 1889. John Calvin then married Sarah Frances Gathings, 4 Feb 1892, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; died 1 Apr 1930, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.
viii. Zachariah T. Deese, born Oct 1854, Anson County, North Carolina; married Clara W. Gathings, 22 Dec 1890, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; died 22 Jun 1923, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.
ix. Elizabeth Deese was born about 1861 in Anson County, North Carolina.11

No tombstone has been found for Samuel and Sallie and their death occurred many years before death certificates were mandatory in North Caroline. There was a death notice posted for Sallie in the local newspaper.

Thursday, September 15, 1881 ANSON TIMES (Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC) -Died: Near Jones’ Creek, September 6th, 1881, Mrs. Sallie DEES, aged 70 years. [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jganis/unionco/newspapers1881-1889.html]

No death notice or obituary had been found for Samuel Deese but we know he died about 4 June 1888 at the age of 88 because of this clipping.
Found in Anson County Commissioner Proceedings Volume A, page 338 - June 4, 1888 - Ordered by the Board of Commissioners that the treasurer pay William McGregor two dollars 25 cents for coffin for Sam Dees. Facebook posting by Steve Bailey.

Samuel Deese is my paternal 2nd Great Grandfather.

Amanuensis Monday~Will of Burridge Purvis, Jr.

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.
His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is the WILL of Burridge Purvis, Jr.1

Burridge Purvis, Sr. and his brother William Purvis were merchants in Columbia, South Carolina. They had one of the largest grocery stores on the corner of Richardson Street and Gervais. Richardson Street is know known as Main Street.

In July 1816 , Burridge Purvis, Sr., died on a return trip back to his home in Glassmount, Fifeshire, Scotland. Surviving him were his widow and eight children; 4 sons and 4 daughters. His widower, Mary (Brown) Purvis erected a monument on his grave in Scotland. It can be viewed by clicking here.

Although Burridge maintained a business in the United States his wife and children remained in Scotland. Shortly after Burridge Sr. death on 17 July 1816, his widow Mary also lost her youngest son, Alexander, reported to have perished in a fire on 21 June 1819.

It’s not known, by myself, exactly when his 3 three sons, William, John and Burridge, Jr. came to America; but, after their Father’s death they can be found in Mobile, Alabama, Warren County, Mississippi and Louisiana.

John had land holdings in Mississippi in Warren and Sunflower counties and Burridge, his brother, was very successful in Mobile, Alabama. Sometime around September 1837 Burridge Purvis, Jr. died in Alabama. His closest relative was his brother, John Purvis, in Warren County, Mississippi.

The following document is on file in Warren County, Mississippi.

WILL OF BURRIDGE PURVIS, Jr.

Probate Court April Term 1841
Copy of Record of B. Purvis Will &c
The State of Alabama    at an Orphan Court  begun and held for Mobile County  I Said State at the Court House in the city of Mobile on the 18th day of October 1837 present the Honorable John J. Everett Judge of the said Court the following preceding in the matter of the Will of Burridge Purvis were  held.  In the matter of the Will of it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that the late Burridge Purvis whom Will is now hereby submitted by his brother John for probate has no widower or kindred in this state except the said John and That a portions of his goods and chattel, are in this County It is therefore ordered that the said Will having  been Satisfactorily proven as the last will and Testament of the Said Burridge Purvis be admitted to record as such and it is further ordered that the said John Purvis be appointed  administrator with the Will annexed of the said Burridge Purvis he having qualified according to law and Executed bond in the sun of two hundred dollars with Thomas Rogers and John D. Haynes which bond is now hereby the court approved of and accepted , which will of Burridge  is in the words and figures following to wit:Know all men by these presents that I, Burridge Purvis son of the late Burridge Purvis of Glassmount, Fifeshire, Scotland do
make this my last Will and Testament Viz I do hereby give & bequeath to the children of my sister Eliza Blackie One hundred pounds Sterling Sister Ann Blackie One hundred pounds Sterling  I give & bequeath to each of the children of my Sister Mary Spears One hundred pounds Sterling each I give & bequeath to my Brother John Purvis, all my interest in the Estate of Glassmount, Fifeshire, Scotland  I give & bequeath to my said Brother John all my interest in the plantation and Slaves thereon situate in Yazoo County.
Burridge Purvis, Jr. is reported to have died on 1 September 1837. I DO NOT have any documents other than the one above that states that Burridge Purvis died on 1 September 1837.

However, I did find this obituary in the Charleston Courier for 13 September 1843; but, it only confuses the issue. This is 6 years after Burridge was reported deceased in Mobile, Alabama. 2

The Relatives, Friends and Acquaintances of M. William Purvis, and Mr. and Mrs. John Dixon, are [[illegible] respectfully invited to attend the Funeral of BURRIDGE PURVIS, at St. Paul’s Church, This afternoon,[illegible] o’clock.
Burridge Purvis, Jr.
