Amanuensis Monday~Searching and Finding a Death Date For Allen M. Page

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is Searching and Finding a Death Date For Allen M. Page.

Allen M. Page, born in 1829, a son of Sion Page and his wife Nancy. Allen can only be found  in one census, by name. That census is the 1850 Census for Stanly County, NC. Allen M. Page is listed in the household of Sion and Nancy Page as a 21 years old male.1

In 1853, Allen M. Page married Sarah “Sallie’ Huneycut. Sarah was a daughter of Mark and Charity Dry Huneycutt. She was my  2nd Great Grand Aunt. Allen and Sallie had one child, a daughter called “Bitha” born 21 June 1854. It was alleged and documented in many on-line trees that Allen M. Page died in 1854. No source was given. 2
No additional information, no sources, nothing more was documented beyond the fact that Allen M. Page died in 1854.  This lack of information stirred my curiosity so I went looking for the source of this date – 1854. That search led me to Allen M. Page Probate folder, which can be found here:3
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-35566-9873-39?cc=1911121

Two pages from that folder of 39 images are provided and transcribed below. What I found was that Allen M. Page did in fact died in 1854; how he died I do not know. Image 36, dated 13 October 1854, is a petition by his wife Sarah Huneycutt Page for a years provisions.  Image 38, states that “your petitioner is the relict of Allen Page who died in the year 1854 leaving some personal property & leaving your Petitioner wholly unprovided for, in view of the premises…”

Probate record proves that Allen M. Page died sometime before 13 October 1854 in Stanly County, NC. No specific date was stated within the 39 pages of the probate file.

Sunday’s Obituary~Sinclair Charles Sellers

Mr. Sinclair Sellers, who was seriously wounded in a fight with his brother Tuesday, June 17th, died in the Wadesboro hospital last Monday night. According to physicians at [the] hospital death was not due to injuries received in the fight but to acute peritonitis. Due apparently to something he had been drinking, a serious inflammation set up in the intestines followed by septic poisoning. Funeral services were held at Cross Roads church Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. Luther Knight.  Mr. Sellers is survived by his wife and eight children; his father, Mr. W. D. Sellers and seven brothers and sisters. Lonnie P. Sellers, brother to the unfortunate man, had surrendered to the sheriff and was awaiting the outcome of the injuries. The physicians are quoted as stating that the wound on Sinclair’s neck was healing nicely and was in no way responsible for his death.1

Sinclair Charles Sellers was born 15 July 1888, a son of William David and Nancy Annie E. Anderson Sellers. He married Lelia Mae Smith, a daughter of Rilah Wallace Smith, Sr., and Elizabeth Streater. As stated above, they had eight children; four sons and four daughters.

Surname Saturday~It's Family Time~John Calvin & Sarah Frances Deese

It's Family Time After the passing of my Great Grandmother Louvena Huneycutt Deese on 16 October 1889 my Great Grandfather was left in a very awkward position.1 As a farmer, he was used to going to the fields on a daily basis. The death of his wife Louvena left him with 4 young daughters ranging in age from 4 years to a new born baby to care for; a task usually left to the mother.

John Calvin had to get someone to tend his children not only temporarily but also on a permanent basis.

Louvena, his youngest daughter, given her Mother’s name passed away on 16 October 1890 exactly one year and one day after her birth.2

John Calvin needed a new bride.

His source of care for his other three daughters on a permanent basis turned out to be Miss Sarah Frances Gathings, age 33, daughter of William Washington Gathings and Charlotte Jones.

John Calvin Deese and Sarah Frances Gathings were married on 4 February 1892 in Morven, Anson County, North Carolina.3

John Calvin and Sarah Francis had three children; all daughters. Their first born was Winnie Elizabeth born in September 1893.

John Calvin Deese and Sarah Frances Gathings had the following children: 4 5 6 7

i. Winnie Elizabeth Deese, born 10 Sep 1893, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; married Joseph Vernon Streater, abt Sep 1920; died 18 Jun 1980, Ozark, Dale, Alabama.8

ii. Cora Lee Deese was born on 18 Aug 1895 in Morven, Anson, North Carolina. She died on 16 Apr 1968 at the age of 72 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina. She was buried on 18 Apr 1968 in Morven, Anson, North Carolina.9

iii. Callie Blanche Deese, born 21 Apr 1897, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; married Ruben Thomas Phillips, abt 1925; died 24 Dec 1968, Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.10

I wrote about my Great Grandmother Louvena Huneycutt and her husband, John Calvin Deese here:

http://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2014/01/52-ancestors-2-louvena-huneycutt-deese.html

John Calvin was twice married; first to Louvena Huneycutt, second to Sarah Frances Gathings. John had 7 daughters and no sons from these two marriages; six of seven daughters lived to adulthood. Five of the daughters married and one remained single.
John Calvin died on 1 April 1930; his wife survived another 20 years passing away in March 1950. They are buried in the Morven Cemetery, Morven, Anson County, North Carolina.11

Identifying the Correct Solomon S. Huneycutt from Confusing Information found in Original and Derivative Sources

From North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865. Volume 10. Page 270 we find the following information about the service of Solomon S. Huneycutt of Stanly County, No. Carolina.1

Solomon S. Huneycutt, Private
Born in Stanly County where he resided prior to enlisting in Duplin County on October 5, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until he deserted on August 16, 1864. Returned to duty on October 18, 1864. Wounded in the left leg and thigh and captured at or near Wise's Fort on March 19, 1865. Hospitalized at New Bern where he died on April 16, 1865, of wounds. [Death records give his age as 20.]

North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865 is a Derivative Source containing Secondary Information and it appears to contain some glaring errors especially in the case of this Soldier-Solomon S. Huneycutt.

Solomon S. Huneycutt was born 6 September 1833 a son of George W. Huneycutt and Jane Elizabeth Burris. He died in late 1862.

On 16 December 1856, he married Lucy Almond in Stanly County, North Carolina. At the outbreak of the Civil War in January 1861; Solomon enlisted on 15 March 1862 into Company "C" 28th Reg't, NC Infantry (State Troops). 2

On Ancestry Message Board, Surname HUNNICUTT  we find this entry about the George W. Huneycutt family and the following comments about Solomon S. Huneycutt: Solomon S. (died in Civil War, according to grandmother's journal, 6-29-1862 age 28 years, 9 months and 23 days),…
http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.hunnicutt/212.2.1/mb.ashx

The Civil War Records (http://www.Fold3.com)  for Solomon S. Huneycutt corresponds with information stated above from the Book – North Carolina Troops.

Solomon S. Huneycutt Civil War Record can be accessed at: https://www.fold3.com/image/20/46049096

The file consists of 20 images and clearly shows Solomon S. Huneycutt available for duty from his enlistment on 15 March 1862 into Company "C" 28th Reg't, NC Infantry (State Troops). His capture on May 27, 1862 at Chancellorsville and his parole at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.  Image 15 also shows Solomon to be 5 foot 8 inches, Red hair, hazel eyes, fair Complexion and 36 years of age.

There is no doubt that Solomon S. Huneycutt died in 1862; so how could he have continued to serve throughout the duration of the War. It obvious there are two or more Solomon Honeycutt's and that their records have been contaminated, combined, co-mingled.

His wife Lucy Allman Huneycutt swore in open Court that her husband Solomon S. Huneycutt had died since the last term of this Court. 3

"order, proceeded on the 21st day of November to view the estate of Solomon S. Huneycutt deceased, and out of the crops. Stock and provisions on hand we have laid off and allotted to Lucy Huneycutt, widow, as follows, that is to say..."

There is one other Solomon Honeycutt that served from North Carolina. He can be found in North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865. Volume 8,  Page 146

HUNEYCUTT, SOLOMON, Private
Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 36, March 15, 1862. Captured at Hanover Court House, Virginia, May 27, 1862. Confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia and at fort Columbus, New York Harbor. paroled and transferred to Aiken’s Landing, James River, Virginia, where he was received July 12, 1862, for exchange. Declared exchanged at Aiken’s landing on August 5, 1862. returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, on or about May 2, 1863. retired to duty on an unspecified date. Reported on detail at Richmond, Virginia, during September 1864-February 1865, by reason of disability. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia April 9. 1865.

Then we have this Solomon Huneycutt, Co. H, 42nd. He also was known as Solomon S. Honeycutt and Solomon F. Honeycutt.

Solomon Huneycutt, Co. H, 42nd MC

His military record can be found at:
https://www.fold3.com/image/271/49882262
This Solomon enlisted 5 October 1863 almost a year after the death of Solomon S. Huneycutt of Stanly County.
He enlisted at Kenansville, Duplin County, NC.
This man was wounded (gunshot wound left leg & thigh 12 March 1865)  and Deserted August 16, 1964. Rejoined from desertion on 18 October 1864. He died 16 April 1865.
Solomon S. Huneycutt, son of George W. Huneycutt of Stanly County died shortly before November 1862. His place of death is unknown; it was the Solomon Honeycutt from Duplin County, NC that was interred at New Bern, NC.

His military record can be found at:

On this fifteenth day of February A.D.1853 before me, the subscriber, a Justice of the Peace in and for the County aforesaid, personally appeared Mary Boan and acknowledged the foregoing Power of Attorney to be her act and deed, for the purposes therein stated.
In Testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand,}
The day and year aforesaid.}
                                             K. T. Morgan Magst.

This document, found within the pension file of Lucretia Therrell, widow of Moses Therrell, Revolutionary Soldier (R-10489) clearly states that in February 1853 Lucretia and Moses had three surviving children, all daughters, namely Wealthy Brown,  Abigail Therell and Mary Boan.

The name of Mary [Therrell] Boan husband is not known; but, research shows that  Rebecca, Effy, Mary, Diana ‘Ann’ and  Alice were her daughters. There are most likely more children, whom as of today, have not been identified.

While we have this document that clearly show the existence and marriage of a Mary Therrell to an Unknown Boan many on-line trees makes no mention of Mary Therrell Boan. I did find on-line documents showing her as born in 1783 and passing away on 11 Apr 1845.

Lucretia Therrell

However, the document above dated 15 February 1853 clearly proved that she passed away sometime after 15 February 1853.

While no concrete proof or single document has been found naming the husband of Mary Therrell Boan; the most likely candidate is Christopher Boan.

If you have any information related to individuals named within this blog post I would love to hear from you.

Amanuensis Monday~David Coble Will, 1841

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:

Sunday’s Obituary~Daniel G. Graham

Mr. Daniel G. Graham
Mr. Daniel G. Graham died at his home at Midway, January 22nd, 1927, at 6:30 a.m., aged 78 years. Mr. Graham moved to Richmond County many years ago from Chesterfield County, SC, where he was born May 8th, 1848. He engaged in farming in several parts of the County, at the J. R. Coley place, later near Ellerbe and then in the Osborne section. He was married first to Miss Mary Ann Eddins on October 29th, 1873. After her death he married Miss Harriett Newell Deas, November 2, 1900. Mr. Graham was an honest, kind hearted, friendly man and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of a wide circle of sincere friends. He had a cheerful disposition – never sorrowed by the vexations of life – always ready with a kind word or an innocent joke, which he thoroughly enjoyed and never resented even when told at his own expense. The funeral services were held at Mount Olive Methodist Church, Chesterfield County, where he was a member, and had been since early childhood. Services were conducted by the pastor of Mt. Olive church and Rev. F. T. Biggs with a large congregation of friends and relatives. Interment was in the church cemetery. Mr. Graham is survived by a wife and seven children.

Daniel’s first wife, Mary Ann Eddins is my 1st Cousin threes times removed.

Mary Ann Eddins is the daughter of James Ellis Eddins, Sr, and Diana ‘Ann’ Boan.

The Marriage of my 2nd Great Grandparents – James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Elizabeth Page

In the 1850’s the Huneycutt and Page families were neighbors in rural Stanly County, North Carolina.

The Marcus Honeycutt family with his wife, Charity Dry had nine children; six sons and three daughters. Down the road a few families lived Sion Page with his wife Nancy. Sion and Nancy had nine children also; six daughters and three sons.

So the children of these two couples grew up knowing each other’s from birth to adulthood.

So it is no surprise in 1855 that James W. Honeycutt and Sarah Elizabeth Page united in Holy Matrimony on 20 May 1855 in Stanly County, North Carolina.
The marriage was documented a book entitled “Record of Marriage by Ministers and JP's; Volume #1, Years 1850-1867” on page 16.1

Finding the Death Date of Levi K. Huneycutt, Document Analysis

Fifty-two of fifty three Family Trees for Levi K. Huneycutt shows his death as January 1856 in Stanly County, North Carolina.

THEY ARE ALL WRONG and proof that a lot of copying and very little research has been conducted.

That’s 52 wrong and one tree that has narrowed his death date down to a specific time period - Aft. 06 Jun 1860

This date – aft 6 June 1860 is a good date for assessing Levi’s death if the only documents you have consulted are the US Census; but, it doesn’t meet the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) for an exhaustive search.

1860 CENSUS: Stanly County, North Carolina; Roll: M653_914; Image: 20; Family History Library Film: 803914, Page 10(stamped); Line 6, Dwelling 124, Family 124; Levi K. HUNEYCUTT, Male, age 17, born in NC.

This was the last Census in which Levi K. Huneycutt appeared with his family. His absence from the 1870 Census suggests that he quite possibly died between 1860 and 1870.

Further research shows that he did in fact died shortly after the 1860 Census was enumerated. A search of the Stanly County, NC probate files revealed a probate folder consisting of 28 pages for Levi K. Huneycutt.

Citation:
"North Carolina Estate Files, 1663-1979," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-35569-26901-99?cc=1911121 : accessed 17 November 2015), Stanly County > H > Huneycutt, Levi K (1863) > image 1 of 28; State Archives, Raleigh.
clip_image004

The tab on this folder shows that Levi K. Huneycutt died in 1863; so right away, before we every look at the folder, we can say that Levi Huneycutt died between the 6 June 1860 (1860 Census date) and 31 December 1863. That’s a 2 ½ years period.

Looking at the contents of his probate folder we can narrow this date to a smaller time period. First, we systematically go through all twenty two images and record any dates that may be listed. You are searching for the earliest data mentioned within the Probate folder. So in this case (Levi’s Probate Folder) as I went through the folder I wrote down 3 key images that I would like to re-visit. – Image 5, Image 8, Image 11and Image 28

Image 5 – is a receipt dated Feb. 8, 1864
Image 8 – Is a receipt signed by Mary Coble Huneycutt dated 2 Dec 1863 (this is a very faint document)
Image 11 – Court Petition
Image 28 - Summary Sheet dated 1 December 1863

It’s a key document in that Mary Coble Huneycutt is signing a Petition stating:
The Petition of Mary Honeycutt Widow of Levi K. Honeycutt, showeth unto your Worships that her husband lately died intestate, and that Administration on the Estate had been granted to Adam W. Honeycutt….
The Petition is dated November Term 1863

In summary, The writing (Petition) of Mary Coble Huneycutt at the November term 1863 of court shows that Levi K. Huneycutt died intestate sometime near the last quarter of 1863. His Widow, Mary Honeycutt, petition the courts during the November term for Administration of the Estate.  Adam W. Huneycutt, a son of Levi K and Mary Coble Huneycutt, was named administrator of the Estate.

Amanuensis Monday~John Wiley Huneycutt to Demsey Huneycutt Senr.

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is a Stanly County Land Deed John Wiley Demsey Huneycutt Junr. to Demsey Huneycutt Senr..[1]

L. K. Huneycutt.                                               Dempsey Huneycutt {seal}
Adam W. Huneycutt
North Carolina} June 26th 1854
Stanly County} Then the execution of this deed was proved on the oath of Levi K. Huneycutt therefore let it be registered.                           R. Harris, Clk
Registered 28th June 1854                                              S. S. Stone, Regr.

This is the last known document that I have found for Dempsey Huneycutt, Sr.; it proves that on 13 April 1844 that he was still alive. Many family trees shows that he died in 1850. This date is suspect because if he had died in 1849 he would have been listed in the 1850 Mortality Census. His absence from the Mortality census suggest that he died between this deed (13 April 1844) and 31 December 1848.

Sunday’s Obituary~William Benjamin Davis

William Benjamin DAVIS -  Another of Chesterfield's grand old gentlemen who wore the grey has answered the final summons and joined the vast army on the other short. Mr. W. W. Davis, of the Zoar section, answered to the last "taps" and fell asleep at seven o'clock Tuesday evening. Eighty-two years of age, his health had been failing for some time and his passing was not unexpected. Mr. Davis had lived a long, useful and happy life, a devout Christian and a high type of southern gentleman. He enlisted in the Confederate army at the age of 16, was seriously wounded and captured. He was a life long member of the Methodist Church. His body was laid to rest Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 at the Morven cemetery, the Revs. Latham and Way performing the last sad rites. He was married three times and is survived by his present wife and the following children: Mr. J. J. Davis, Mrs. Minnie Mauldin, Mrs. W. R. Winfree, Mr. W. W. Davis, Mrs. A. M. Gardner, Mrs. Irene Miller, Mr. C. E. Davis, Mrs. Bessie Griggs, Mr. E. D. Davis, Mrs. Thurman B. Teal, Messrs. J. Colon Davis, Hoy W. Davis and Leo F. Davis and a very extensive family connection.
