Amanuensis Monday~Last Will and Testament of Mary Pitts, 1858.

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is the Last Will and Testament of Mary Pitts, 1858.

On 21 September 1883, Mary Smith, Margaret J. Robeson with William L. Robeson presented the Will of Mary Pitts to the Probate Court for disposition. Mary Pitts had written her Will back in February 1858 leaving everything to her two daughters, Catherine and Flora. She also had a son Alexander, age 30, that was enumerated in her household in 1850 but had evidently died by February 1858. He is not mentioned in the Will and two of his sons are living in Mary’s household in 1860 Census.

1860, Chesterfield Co., SC, page 119B
Mary did not name an Executor for her estate so the Probate Court had to appoint an Administrator to manage and dispose of both real and personal property within the estate.

There is no document within the estate folder naming an administrator but in all probability William L. Roberson was the Administrator.

I have no record of this family after the 1860 Census other than the probate of this Will. I have not checked land deeds.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #534–Hulda Davis.

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Today we will be looking at the following Estate folders:

On 29 May 1888, William Alfred Davis passed away leaving several “infant” children. One of those children was his daughter, Hulda Davis.

This folder contain documents that were created by a “Petition for a Guardianship for Hulda Davis”.

The petition of Hulda Davis shows to this Court:
1. That she is an heir at law of the late Wm. A. Davis and is an infant over the age of Fourteen years.
2. That the estate of said William A. Davis is in due cause of settlement and petitioner has no guardian to receive and attend to her interest therein of about one hundred dollars.
3. That petitioner is desirous of having a guardian appointed and Jacob Davis is a suitable person to be appointed such therefore petitioner prays that Jacob Davis may be appointed his <sic> [her] guardian for the said State and County and your petitioner ever prays & c.
Hulda Davis Signature

Nancy J. Hurst, wife of William A. Davis had died earlier in 1888 on February 8 leaving him with 5 children under the age of twenty-one. They ranged in age from 12 to 23 and there were 2 children, age 21 and 23. The death of William thus left those 5 children to be cared for by relatives and their two oldest siblings whom were of age.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Sellers-Jackson Marriage

Julius Alexander Sellers, son of Hardy Huntley Sellers and Mary Eliza Sinclair was born 16 April 1855.

On 17 December 1888, at age 37, Julius A. Sellers married Louise Virginia ‘Jennie’ Jackson, age 25. Jennie Jackson was born 22 January 1858, a daughter of Benjamin A. Jackson and Catherine Mary Blakeney. We have a record of their marriage because they chose to be married in Union County, North Carolina rather then in their home county of Chesterfield, South Carolina.

From the Union County North Carolina Marriage Register we have the following entries:

Sellers-Jackson 1888 Marriage

Portion of Marriage Register

Marriage Register

Jackson-Sellers Marriage Entry

The marriage register entry shows that Julius and Jennie were married on 17 Dec. 1888.   The absence of names/signatures on the right panel above seems to suggest that the marriage took place without any family or friends on hand to witnesses the said marriage.

Before his death in October 1917, Julius Alexander Sellers and Louise Virginia Jackson were married 28 years and 10 months and had the following children:

i. Mary Claire Sellers, born 5 Feb 1890, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Dr. James Ernest Funderburk; died 29 Apr 1934, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii. Eugenia Sinclair Sellers, born 24 Mar 1891, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married P. J. Suttlemyre; died 12 May 1960, Hickory, Catawba, North Carolina.
iii. Ella Jackson Sellers, born 3 Oct 1892, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Horace C. Lutz; died 1 Oct 1977, Hickory, Catawba, North Carolina.
iv. Virginia Sellers, born 29 May 1894, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Mason Jay Yeager; died 6 Feb 1974, Morganton, Burke, North Carolina.
v. Amy Dell Sellers, born 24 Jul 1896, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Carl Dana Moore; died 1 Nov 1988, Hickory, Catawba, North Carolina.

Amanuensis Monday~Guardianship of Etta Lee Kite, 1915.

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is the Guardianship of Etta Lee Kite, 1915.

The guardianship of Etta lee Kite is a sad and complicated case detailed  in documents contained within probate Folder #1009.

Robert Lee Kite son of  John Wesley Kite and Sarah J. Ousley married Etta M. Douglas about 1896. Etta M. Douglas, born 16 June 1882, was the daughter of James Baldwin Douglas and his deceased wife Mary Catherine.

Robert Lee and Etta M. had a daughter Etta Lee Kite born 6 December 1906. Then on 9 December 1907, Etta M. Douglas Kite passed away. This left Robert Lee  alone with a baby to raise. By 1910, Robert Lee had moved to Cleveland County Arkansas and re-married to a young lady named Emma H. Douglas with a small son.

Then on 13 February 1910 James Baldwin Douglass passed away leaving as one of his heirs, his granddaughter, Etta M. Kite. On 19 December 1910, B. J. Douglass was appointed by the court as guardian of Etta M. Kite interest in her grandfather estate.

Etta Lee Kite
Transcription:
Chesterfield, S.C. Apr. 6, 1915
To: The Honorable Probate Judge of Chesterfield County;
B. J. Douglas, Guardian for Etta Lee Kite, begs leave to submit the following report:
There was paid unto my hands from J. B. Douglass estate, five hundred and seventeen dollars and fifty cents, in December 1910. There was into my hands from the estate of Margaret McNair ten dollars and fifty cents in July, 1914. All of which is hereby acknowledged.
These funds were received by me with the expressed understanding that they were payable when the said Etta Lee Kite became of age or as her needs might demand, and where-as it was represented to me that the custodians, Me. R. Lee Kite, and Mrs. Emma Kite were in dire straits, and not wishing to be deceived, Mr. E. A. Douglass made trip to Arkansas and looked on the situation as it actually appeared, with advice to check on B. J. and E. A. Douglass upon his arrival he found that the conditions warranted him to check them three hundred and seventy-five dollars. By and with the consent of Mr. R. Lee Kite and Mrs. Emma Kite father and stepmother of Etta Lee Kite, suitable monuments were erected to their family dead at a cost of Sixty-six and two thirds dollars. They were not consulted, but have charged up against this interest in J. B. Douglass estate one sixth of expense of maintaining father two years in my own home, three hundred dollars; also one sixth burial expense and monument expense both items being twenty seven dollars and eighty-two cents. All of which is more fully shown by itemized statement appended hereto.
All of which is respectfully submitted.
                            B. J. Douglass, Guardian (signed)

Kite Ledger

In 1914, Robert Lee Kite was granted Guardianship of his daughter and in a document dated 27 January 1915 there was an objection to releasing B. J. Douglass from Guardianship because all the money collected had not been distributed to Etta Lee Kite and B. J. Douglass was indebted to her.

Objection to Dismissal -Etta lee Kite

Etta Lee survived, grew up and at age 19 married Jeff D Frazier on 10 Dec 1925 in Fordyce, Dallas County, Arkansas.  She died at age 84, on 21 January 1991, Fordyce, Dallas County, Arkansas. FindaGrave Memorial # 11217851.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Sidney Purvis Birth Certificate

Access to birth certificate in South Carolina is very restrictive so this document is a real treasure.

Sidney Purvis was born 17 October 1915, a son of Nicholas ‘Nick” Purvis, age 56, and Rachel Ann Boan, age 28. Sidney was Rachel’s fourth child but only 3 were living. That explains why I only show 2 previous births in my database for Nick and Rachel.

The birth certificate shows that baby Sidney was delivered by a Midwife named Jane Crowley. This was very common during this time period.

The birth certificate was filed by J. A. Davis on 25 October 1915 where it became certificate #34840, Certificate of Birth – Sidney Purvis.

Birth-Sidney Purvis

Nicholas Purvis and Rachel Ann Boan were married in late 1910 or early 1911. In 1910 Census, Nick and Rachel are unmarried at the time of census enumeration in April 1910. Nick is listed as a widow with children and Rachel is listed as single. Their first born child, Bennie Cleveland Purvis was born on 5 December 1911.

Nick and Rachel had 6 known children, 2 of which died as infants.

Amanuensis Monday~Will of Frank P. Taylor, 1899.

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.
 His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is the Will of Frank P. Taylor, 1899.

Franklin Pierce Taylor married Cornelia E. Rivers daughter of  William M. “Billy’ Rivers and Ann Eliza Kelley. They had three children, all boys. Their first born, James Oscar, arrived on 27 August 1875 so it is believed that they were married sometime in late 1874.

This family experienced a lot of tragedy beginning with the death of Franklin Pierce Taylor on 27 July 1899 followed with the death of the middle son, James Edwin Taylor,  on  28 August 1899. After losing her husband and son so close together Cornelia E. Rivers Taylor passed away on 15 March 1906. Then Karl Franklin one of the two remaining boy passed away on 20 August 1913 leaving James Oscar the only surviving family member.

Cornelia Rivers is my 2nd Cousin 4 times removed and the boys are my 3rd cousin 3 times removed.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #1390–Lizzie Odom, Guardian Appointment

Folder #1390
Lizzie Odom
This estate folder begins at image #1367 and ends with image #1372. (images 1367-1372)

Robert J. Vick, father of Elizabeth ’Lizzie’ Vick Odom, died on 17 May 1896 leaving her Mother, Louisa Watson Vick a widow with four small children.  Louisa married James Aaron Sellers in early 1900 sometime before the census enumeration occurred in June 1900.

About 1913, Elizabeth ’Lizzie’ Vick married John Dwight Odom. This marriage year is a calculation based on the birth of their first born child, Mendel Wilson Odom, on 7 September 1914.  Another document from a Chesterfield Estate Folder #1390, labeled Lizzie Odom shows Lizzie Vick signing her name as Lizzie Odom on 17 December 1913.

It’s Family Time ~ Jacob Kanoy and Sally Dry

It's Family Time
Research on the family of  my 3rd Great Grand Aunt has been very sparse. A marriage bond, 4 registered deeds and  several census has been the limit my current research efforts.  Sally grew up in Cabarrus County, a daughter of Johan Martin Dry and Catherine Keppell. Her parents were married in Mecklenburg County about 1785/86.

Gtantor-Canoy-Iredell

Sally Dry and Jacob Kanoy were married on 7 June 1824 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

image

Jacob and Sally remained in the Cabarrus County until  they moved north and west across county lines into Iredell County where they can be found in 1860 census.

They lost their only known son in the Civil War.

Jacob Canoy and Sally Dry had the following known children:
i. Catharine E. Canoy was born about 1825.
ii. Sarah L. Canoy was born about 1838.
iii. Jacob M Canoy was born about 1840. He died at Camp Pickens of typhoid fever on 8/28/1861 at Manassas in Virginia. [https://www.fold3.com/image/30651854]

If you have information on this family I would love to hear from you.

Sally Dry Canoy is my 3rd Great Grand Aunt.
