Mystery Monday~Revisited - Did Tobias A. Honeycutt Die in the Civil War?

Tobias A. Huneycutt is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle. He is the second born son of Marcus I. Huneycutt and his wife Charity Dry.

Back on 2 November 2015 I wrote an article entitled “Did Tobias A. Honeycutt Die in the Civil War?” You can read it here:

http://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2015/11/mystery-mondaydid-tobias-honeycutt-die.html

The purpose of this post is to revisit this question, answer it and provide additional information.

The short answer is – No, Tobias A. Huneycutt DID NOT Die in the Civil War.

But, a Tobias Honeycutt of Rowan County, North Carolina DID DIE in the Civil war.

Tobias A. Huneycutt
Tobias A. Huneycutt, b. about 1824 married Elizabeth Miriam 'Mary Ann" Honeycutt on 7 Nov 1852 in Stanly County, NC. He was the son of Mark Huneycutt and Charity Dry; she was a daughter of Andrew Jackson Huneycutt, Sr. and Mary Ann 'Polly" Crayton.1

Tobias A. Huneycutt & Elizabeth Huneycutt

No war record has been found for any other Tobias Honeycutt that served  during the Civil War. Therefore, if he did serve, his presence in the 1870 census for Mecklenburg County, North Carolina is proof that Tobias A. Huneycutt survived the war.2

1870 CENSUS: Charlotte City Ward 2, Mecklenburg, North Carolina; Roll: M593_1148; Image: 149; Family History Library Film: 552647, Page: 73A (stamped); Line 32, Dwelling 112, Family 113; Tobias HUNECUTT, male, age 46, born in NC; Elizabeth HUNECUTT, Wife, age 28, born in NC; Rufus HUNECUTT, Son, age 20, born in NC; Jackson HUNECUTT, Son, age 17, born in NC; Mary HUNECUTT, Daughter, age 15, born in NC; Sarah HUNECUTT, Daughter, age 13, born in NC; Susan HUNECUTT, Daughter, age 10, born in NC; Maggie HUNECUTT, Daughter, age 8, born in NC and Tobitha HUNECUTT, Daughter, age 1, born in NC.

Tobias A. Huneycutt lived in Stanly and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

Tobias Honeycutt

This Tobias Honeycutt, b. about 1827 married Esther Clementine Weant on 15 Mar 1848, Rowan, North Carolina. The parents of this Tobias Honeycutt are not known. 3
Honeycutt-Weant

Tobias Honeycutt husband of  Esther Clementine Weant DID DIE in the Civil War.
First, we have the 1880 census where E. C. Honeycutt, age 53, is listed as a widower. 4

Second, from the Book Series “NC Troops 1961-1865, A Roster”, we find this entry. 5

HONEYCUTT, TOBIAS, Private
Enlisted at Salisbury at age 40, January 1, 1864, for the war.
Reported present in May-June 1864.Hospitalized at Salisbury.
Died in hospital in Salisbury on August 23, 1864, of “remit[tent}

And finally, his widow Esther Honeycutt claimed all his personal effects and monies.6
Claim of Tobias Honeycutt Effects

Tobias Honeycutt lived in Rowan County, North Carolina.

If this Tobias Honeycutt is your ancestor or if you know the parents of this Tobias Honeycutt I would love to hear from you.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #109–William Riley Sellers

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Today we will be looking at the following Estate folder:
Folder #109

William R. Sellers1

The estate folder begins at image 555. There are 18 images within the estate folder. (images 555-572)

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19384-44866-53?cc=1911928

William Riley Sellers was born abt 1823, a son of Roland Sellers and Margaret Eddins. I thought this post was going to be easy but once I got into the Probate file I realized my research was not complete.

There are eight William R. Sellers in my database. The administrator of probate file #109 was Richard Calvin Sellers so this narrows the candidates to either his brother William Riley or his son William Riley.

Looking at his son’s death date of 1947 eliminates him because the probate took place in 1862; but, I have his brother William Riley Sellers death recorded as 23 March 1865.
Obviously, something is amiss here. If William Riley Sellers died in 1865 his brother would not be administrating his estate in 1862.  So off I go to Fold3.com to reviews civil war records. Looking at my genealogical database I see that I have three William R. Sellers of age to serve in the Civil War; but, only two died in the Civil War.

  • William Riley Sellers, b.  abt 1823, son of Roland Sellers and Margaret Sellers
  • William Riley Sellers, b.  abt 1822, son of William Eddins Sellers and Elizabeth Parsons.
  • William R. Sellers, b.  abt 182, son of John Sellers and Henrietta Norwood. This William R. moved to Tennessee and died in September 1898.
Because we have Richard Calvin Sellers named as the administrator, we now have sufficient documentation to distinguish which units these men served in and when and where they died.

First, we know that the estate of William Riley Sellers was probated between September 1862 and 19 Aug. 1885. The probate file shows this William Riley’s brother Richard Calvin was named as administrator and documents within the probate files shows that he started the probate process on or about 30 September 1862.

Image 558 2
Image 558 Wm. R. Sellers
Then from the Civil war files on Fold3.com we find this record for a William R. Sellers 3- https://www.fold3.com/image/20/73893261

Pvt. William R. Sellers, Co. B, 8th SC Infantry

Only 6 documents are recorded in this file. the record shows that William R. Sellers, enlisted 13 April 1861, admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 3, Richmond, Virginia on April 9, 1862 (pg 5) and page 6 shows his transfer on May 20th, 1862 to Winder Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. 4

W. R. Sellers

It is between this date 20 May 1862 (to Winder Hospital) and 30 September 1862 (Image 558, Estate Folder) that William Riley Sellers passed away. No document has been found documenting his actual death date but it seems obvious it had to have occurred between these two dates (20 May 1862-30 Sept. 1862).

Two interesting tidbits regarding this W. R. Sellers. “Broken Fortunes” by Randolph W. Kirkland, Jr. shows that he died May 11, 1862. A FindAGrave Memorial (FAG Memorial# 93886626) in the Hollywood cemetery also shows that W. R. Sellers died on 11 May 1862. 5 6
These two items, the Book and the Memorial are "Derivative records" and is consider to be secondary information.

On 19 August 1885, Richard Calvin Sellers petitioned the Courts to settle the estate of William Riley Sellers. Heirs apparent to the estate can be found on Image 572.

The Petition of the undersigned showeth that he is administrator of the Estate of William R. Sellers deceased and that he has settled the Estate in full with all of the Heirs as per voucher in his possession and that he now prays to be discharged from all liabilities as Administrator of Said Estate.
                                                                                         R. C. Sellers

We have a dilemma; I calculated from copies of original documents that William Riley Sellers died between 20 May 1862  and 30 Sept 1862. A FindAGrave memorial and the book “Broken Fortunes” shows this individual passed away on 11 May 1862. No war record exist after page 6 stating that William R. Sellers was “Transf’d to Camp Winder, May 20th”.

It’s Family Time~Who are the Parents of my Great Grandmother-Laura Driggers

It's Family Time
For almost 40 years I have looked for the parents of my Great Grandmother Laura Driggers. Only two known clues exist to even prove that Laura ever existed and only family folklore exist that she is in fact my Great Grandmother.

But, first some background. Sometime before 1860, my Great, Great Grandfather moved from Chesterfield County, SC to Russell County, Alabama where he and the family can be found in 1860. 1

1860 CENSUS: Southern Division, Seals Station, Russell County, Alabama Roll: M653_22; Page: 893; Image: 499; Family History Library Film: 803022; Line 7, Household 238/227. Shadrick JOHNS, 60, Male, Day Laborer, born in SC; Mary JOHNS, 44, Female, House Keeper, born in SC; Alice C. JOHNS, 16, Female, House Keeper, born in SC; Thomas H. JOHNS, 14, Male, born in SC; Henry J. JOHNS, 11, male, born in SC and Anna W. JOHNS, 6, female, born in SC.

You can see that the family consisted of 2 sons and two daughters. The oldest daughter Alice Catherine married Joel S. Toler in Bullock County, Alabama on 30 Sept 1869.  We next find Shadrach, Joseph Henry and two grandchildren, William Shadrac and Mary Toler in Marlboro county in 1880.2 3

1880 CENSUS: Hebron Twsp., Marlboro County, South Carolina; T9_Roll: 1235; Family History Film: 1255235; Page: 460A; Enumeration District: 108; . Film #0448724, Soundex for 1880 SC Census, Film #1255235, Line 22, Dwelling # 43, Family #43. Shade JOHN, age 80, Shingle Getter, born in SC; Joseph JOHN, son, age 31, May TOLAR, grand daughter, age 10, born in SC and William TOLAR, grand son, age 7, born in SC.

To this day, I still do not know what happened to Mary Boan Johns (Wife of Shadrach) Alice Catherine Johns Toler, Joel S. Toler, Thomas H. Johns and Anna W. Johns.
But back in Marlboro in 1880 we find Shadrach (aka Shade), Henry Joseph and the two grandchildren living beside Jeremiah Polston and his family. 4

1880 Census, Hebron
1880 Hebron, Marlboro Co., SC

In the household of Jeremiah Polston is his granddaughter, Laura Driggers, age 10. This is one of the sources I mentioned in the beginning of this post. Yes, I know my Great Grandfather Joseph Henry is listed as age 31 in this census.

Family folklore says that Joseph Henry married Laura Driggers. It is believed that they were married about the time that Laura turned thirteen or about 1883. Over the next 15 years they would conceive 8 known children. Laura would not survived the birth of her eighth child, Mamie in July 1898 and ultimately the child did not survive.  Their children were: 5
  • Walter Joseph, b. abt 1885
  • Julius, b. Mar 1887 (My Grand Father)
  • Annie Bell, b. May 1888
  • Samuel, b. aby 1890
  • Nellie, b. Jul 891
  • Fanny Belle, b. Jul 1892
  • Ida B., abt 1893
  • Mamie, b. July 1898
The other known source that mentions the name Laura Driggers is the death certificate for her daughter – Nellie Johns Heustess.

Death Certificate - Nellie Johns Heustess

That’s it, Laura Driggers existences is only mention in two known documents:
  • 1880 U. S. Census, Marlboro County, South Carolina, population schedule, Marlboro County, South Carolina, ED #108, page 460A, Line 22, Dwelling # 43, Family #43, Household of Shade JOHN.
  • Nellie Huestes, Chesterfield County, South Carolina death certificate 000520 (18 January 1928).6
Laura is not enumerated in the 1900 censuses and I can only surmise that she perished during or shortly after the birth of her daughter Mamie in July 1898.

If you have some spare time, I challenge each and every one reading this blog post to take just a few minutes to look and see if they can find any additional information about Laura Driggers.

Charles Riley Brock, Jr. was born 16 November 1927 a son of Charles Riley Brock, Sr. and Henrietta Florence Pate.2

The National Archives Archival database show that  Charles Riley Brock, Jr. enlisted into the US Army Air Corps on 9 February 1946. 3 He was 18 years, 2 months and 24 days old.

Charles Riley Brock, Jr.

The FindAGrave Memorial for Charles Riley Brock, Jr shows that he served in Korea with the United States Air Force with the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSgt.). Remember that there was no US Air Force at the time of his enlistment into the Army Air Corp. The birth of the Air Force took place on 18 September 1947. 4

There is no doubt that in an effort to build up the new Air Force, Charles Riley was among those chosen or that volunteered to transition into the United States Air Force.

Charles Riley Brock, Jr. died 3 July 1995 in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina at age of 67. he was buried in Grandview Memorial Park, Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Certificate of Marriage-Louvena Huneycutt and John Calvin Deese

On 9 April 1884, a young couple by the name of John Calvin Deese, age 28 and Louvena Huneycutt, age 27 were married at the residence of J. B. Lindsey in Lilesville, Anson County, North Carolina.

Though unknown at the time of the event; this couple would ultimately turned out to be my Great Grandparents.

Louvena Huneycutt-John C. Deese Marriage-page-001
The marriage application shows that John Calvin was the son of Samuel and Sarah [Hill] Deese and that Louvena Huneycutt was the daughter of James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Elizabeth [Page] Huneycutt. The application also shows that John Calvin’s mother was deceased and that the other named parents were still living.
John Calvin and Louvena were a happy young couple with a growing family of young daughters until tragedy struck with the birth of their 4th child, given the namesake of her mother – Louvena.

Louvena, the mother, passed away the day after the birth of daughter, Louvena, on 15 October 1889. A year and a day later on 16 October 1890, Louvena, the daughter passed away.

John Calvin remarried and had 3 additional daughters by his second wife. He passed away on 1 April 1930 in Morven, North Carolina.

John Calvin and Louvena Huneycutt Deese are my paternal Great Grandparents.

Amanuensis Monday~Trust Deed between Sine Page and R. A. Anderson

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is: Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s document is a Trust Deed between Sine Page and R. A. Anderson, 1877. 1

DB 11, pg 501

TRANSCRIPTION:

Sion Page was born about 1802 and died about April 1887. He married Nancy (maiden name unknown). Many on line trees show Nancy’s maiden name to be ”DOVE” and another group has her listed as Nancy “ALMOND”. I have yet to find any documents that would substantiate either of these conclusions. If you have information on Nancy's maiden name I would love to hear from you.
During my on-line search of the Stanly County Deed Books I could not find any other Deeds in which my Sion Page was named. Evidently, he never owned any property within the county.

Sion Page is my 3rd Great Grand Father.

It’s Family Time~Leaving Home

It's Family Time
I grew up in rural Anson County, North Carolina back in the late forty-fifty and early sixties. Back then cotton and tobacco were king and Anson County had it’s share of cotton and tobacco fields.

My earliest memories are of starting school in the fall before I turned six in November of 1948. The school I attended was a one room school with three classes in the school. From the research I have done I’m certain this is a photo of the school I attended or very similar to the school where I started the first grade.

Marburg School

We lived near the railroad track adjacent to Kimberly Dairy. It was about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile from the school and my older sister and I walked to school each day. Daddy worked at the dairy and Mom stayed home to care for my newborn baby sister. The ice man would deliver a huge ice block with ice tongs and place the block in an insulated ice box on the back porch.  Mass production of new  refrigerators was growing with units being sold to customers who could afford them and had electricity to their homes. At this time, many homes in rural America were still without electricity.
After school ended in 1949, we moved from South Carolina to Anson County, North Carolina. We lived on a farm near Jones Creek between Lilesville and Morven.  My daddy’s brother and his family also lived on the same farm; so I grew up interfacing daily with my first cousins from that family. Ironically, although we lived on the same farm, my cousins went to Morven to attend school while my family was required to attend school in Lilesville. But, there is an explanation, my Uncle worked for the Morven school system and transported his children to school each day while we ridden a bus to the school in Lilesville. Had my uncle not worked for the school his children would have also rode the bus to Lilesville.

The class of 1960 was the last segregated class to graduate from this school. Lilesville High was closed, later demolished and a new Elementary School was built on the property.

Lilesville High

When I graduated from school in 1960 there wasn’t much in the way of good steady jobs to be had in Anson County. Mom and Dad moved back across the state line to Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Mom went to work in one the local mills as a seamstress and Dad continuing his carpentry skills building highway bridges across North and South Carolina.

I took a job with Daniels’ Construction Company, as a payroll clerk, and help build what today is Highland Industries and Takata plant in Cheraw, South Carolina. Upon completion of that job, I joined the Air Force in December 1960 and left the cotton fields of North and South Carolina behind me to travel the world.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #370–Sarah A. Odom

Folder #370
Sarah Odom

The estate folder begins at image 1103. There are 20 images within the estate folder. (images 1103-1122)1

Sarah Ann Freeman Odom, wife of John D. Odom, was a daughter of Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis. John and Sarah Ann married about 1856 and had two known children; a son and a daughter.

The Probate file states that Sarah Ann Odom died on June 25, 1882. This is in conflict with a “Bill of Complaint” which states that Sarah Ann died on June 21, 1882. Her tombstone at Bay Springs Baptist Church cemetery only has her years of death (1882) engraved upon the monument.
