To Elisha Ellis Sr., Rebecca Ann Odom, Rachel Bone, Jacob Ellis, John J. Ellis, Wesley Ellis, Christian Kifsiah [Kissiah], Effy Ann Gainy, William Smothers and Elisha Ellis, Jr. legal heirs and representative of John Ellis Greetings:
 
You are hereby required to appear at the Court of probate, to be holden at Chesterfield Court House for Chesterfield County, on the 27th day of December, A. D. 1872, to shew cause, if any you can. why the Real Estate of John Ellis deceased, Situate in Said County on Bear Creek, bounding lands of A. M. Tucker, Elisha Ellis, Sr., W. B. Davis and others and containing four hundred [400] acres more or lefs Should not be divided or Sold, allotting to the Said heirs at law the Share or Shares to which each one is entitled according to their respective legal rights.
Given under my hand and seal this 15th day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight Hundred and seventy Two and in the 97th year of American Independence.
