Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #318– Pleasant A. Brock

Chesterfield County SC Estate Series:  This is a series of postings of selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resource if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Today’s subject is the Estate of  Pleasant A. Brock.

Pleasant A. Brock’s Estate Folder (#318) consists of 25 pages beginning at Image 1141 of 1448  and ending with image 1165 of 1448. The estate was well inventoried and precise with the Widow, Martha Horne Brock, serving as the estate administratrix.

The court appointment of an administratrix shows that Pleasant A. Brock died intestate (without a Will).

I was amazed at the precise inventory by room of this estate and the penmanship of the person recording the estate contents. This is most certain the penmanship of Martha Horne Brock.

Martha petitioned the Court on 1 May 1873 to be granted Letters of Administration.

Mattie E. Brocjk signature

Mattie was granted letters to administer the estate and did so with the help of Attorney L. W. T. Prince. No mention of Pleasant's death date is made within the probate file but we know from his tombstone in the St. David's Episcopal Church cemetery that he died of 28 February 1873. His family Bible shows that Pleasant died from typhoid fever. Pleasant was a Merchant in the town of Cheraw.

Pleasant A. Brock was the son of Alsey Brock and Lucy Morris. He had one brother Charles A. Brock.

After his death, Mattie Horne Brock married Thomas Alexander Gandy on  20 July 1875. When last reviewed the Family Bible was in possession of the Gandy family.

Pleasant and Martha had no children. Martha and Thomas A. Gandy did have four children; 2 sons and 2 daughters.

Pleasant A. Brock is my 1st Cousin 3 times removed.
