Sisters, School Teachers and Orphans

While researching the family of Irvin Samuel Brock and Mary A. Stubbs I found some interesting information concerning their daughters – Lillian Mae and Alliene W. Brock.  Lillian and Alliene are the 2nd and 3rd Children of Irvin & Mary with Lillian being the oldest; 4 year older than her younger sister.

Lillian Mae  married James Lawrence MacDonald and her sister Alliene  W. married George Franklin Rogers. Lillian Mae and another older sister Minnie attended college and graduated; both Lillian and Minnie became school teachers.

Unfortunately, the parents of these children, Irvin and Mary, both died in 1897 resulting in loss opportunity for the remaining two children, Alliene and her brother Leon Coit, to attend college. Minnie & Lillian were away at college when their Dad got sick. His obituary states: “His two daughters, who are students at Winthrop, reach home in time to be with their father during his last hours.”[1]

Documents within Estate Folder #717, Estate of I. S. BROCK, Film #E914, Frame 1345, contain a request by Peter H. BROCK stating that I. S. BROCK died intestate on 12 October 1897, leaving a considerable personal Estate, left no Widow and his children who are of age are ALL GIRLS and the petitioner is BROTHER of the deceased. Dated 16 October 1897. [2]

In 1920, Lillian is living with her sister Minnie and her husband Charles Conglon in Georgetown South Carolina.

In 1930, Lillian was in the State of Maryland working as  an employee (Director) in the  Springfield State Hospital.[3] By 1945, she had moved to Florida to be with her sister Alliene Rogers.

.The 1945 State Census for Florida show Lillian MacDonald (School Teacher) enumerated with Mrs. George F. Rogers and in Dade County Florida.[4]

I still have a big gap in the lives of these three sisters and will continue to research their life after marriage and leaving home.
