James Robert New
b. 10 Dec 1875
d. 20 May 1933

J. R. New, age 57 years, died at his home here Saturday night at 9 o'clock following an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Pageland Presbyterian Church, his pastor, the Rev. I. N. Clegg, officiating, assisted by a former pastor, the Rev. J. A. McIntyre of Chesterfield. Interment was in the Pageland Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. New was born in Meridian, Mississippi, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. C. New, who later moved to Jackson Springs, North Carolina. Mr. New came to this county in 1908, when Pageland was just beginning as a town. For a number of years he was connected with the lumber business in this and other sections of the county and state, and served during part of the 1932 Pageland Police Force, being given a leave of absence in November because of poor health. He was well known and liked all over the county and was a man of straightforward and honest character. Mr. New is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. J. W. McLaughlin of Jefferson, and Miss Atley New of Atlanta, Georgia; four sisters, Mrs. M.H. Dawkins, Darlington; Mrs. Edd McDonald, Kannapolis, North Carolina; Mrs. R.L. Hinson, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Mrs. Ben Gathings of Morven, North Carolina. The floral tributes were many and beautiful and a large crowd of friends gathered to pay their last tribute to the deceased. 1

James Robert New was the son of Rev. James Columbus New and Francis Jane “Fannie” Yates. His Father, Rev. James Columbus was a Methodist Minister.

James Robert New is my wife’s Great Grand Uncle.
