Conway Davis Missing In Pee Dee River


Conway Davis, age 27, the son of Carol C. Davis and Janie Irene Gardner Davis, died in a boating accident on Friday, 24th December 1954.  He and two hunting companions, Dewey Hurst and Foster Edgeworth were out duck hunting when they were thrown from their boat after hitting a snag that ripped a hole in the boat.     


All three survived the initial incident and all seemed to be well; Hurst swam to shore and Edgeworth used the boat as a flotation device and floated to shore successfully. 
 
Rescue squads from the surrounding communities of Dillon, Hamlet, Charlotte and men from the Sonoco in Hartsville, where Davis worked, aided in the search. The Sheriff, his deputies and men from Cheraw and Chesterfield were also active in the search. 
 
The accident happen between Cheraw and Society Hill. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, 4 children and his parents.

  1. Conway Davis is my dad's first cousin and Dewey is his brother-in-law . So I knew this story for many years.
