Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #1396–William Freeman

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

This estate folder begins at image #1435 and ends with image #1473.(images 1435-1473)

William Freeman estate folder contains his Last Will and Testament and many other documents mostly related to medical care in his waning days. His son, Thomas B. Freeman was granted Letters of Testimony on 20 January 1923.  

William was born 9 Aug 1836 a son of Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis. He married Sarah Ann Davis, daughter of Michael and Hulda Davis about 1860.2 Their first born, a daughter named Barzilla was born 18 July 1864. All their children with one exception are named in the above Will; 2 daughters, Barzilla and Hulda Jane and five sons. Not named is a son, Mical J. Freeman born  30 Sept 1866, died 14 July 1889, age 22. 

William Freeman died 27 July 1922. He is buried at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.3

Will Transcription:

I William Freeman of Chesterfield County State of South Carolina being of Sound mind memory and understanding do make my last will and testament in manner and form following
I give devise bequeath to Barzell Davis William John Freeman James Henry Freeman Thomas B. Freeman E. Randolph Freeman Edgar Clarence Freeman all my property personal, real or otherwise the Same shall at my death be sold and divided equal between the above mentioned Children all except the Sum of five $5.00 dollars which I give and bequeath to Hulda Jane Bittle out of the proceeds of the sales of my property.
In witness whereof <sic> I William Freeman the testator to this my last will and testament Set my hand my Seal this 21st day of August A,D, 1916. William X his mark Freeman
Signed Sealed and declared by the above named William Freeman as and for his last will and Testament in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses at his request as witness <sic> there to in presence of the Said testator and of each other.
