In the early 1890, several families migrated from Chesterfield County to Arkansas. Among these families were the Hurst, Lisenby, Gainey’s and others. Also in the group was Joseph Thurman Hurst, son of Phillip James Hurst and Mary Ann Gainey.
A few years prior to this migration Joseph Thurman Hurst had married Amanda J. “Mandy” Davis. Mandy was a daughter of Thomas Franklin Davis and Rosa Caroline Massey. It is not known when Joseph and Mandy left Arkansas but by mid-1900’s they had migrated to Collins County, Texas. Mandy did not survive the trip and presumed to be buried somewhere between Cleveland County, Arkansas and Collins County, Texas.
The 1900 census shows Joseph Thurman all alone without his children; three known children born between 1886 and 1890; two sons and a daughter, of which one son died at birth. Further research finds son Thomas Oscar in the household of James M. Hurst in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory and Mary Eleanor with William J. A. Hurst, Collins County, Texas.
On 8 February 1903, Joseph Oscar Hurst married Keturah Melvina Bounds in Collins County, Texas. 1
i. Phillip Carroll Hurst, born 5 Apr 1904, Collin,Texas; married Mary Belle Gibbs; died 21 Feb 1978, Refugio, Texas.
ii. John E. Hurst, born 20 Aug 1905, Collin County, Texas; married Ruby [LNU], abt 1921; died 13 Apr 1954.
iii. Mary Etta Hurst, born 28 Aug 1909, ,Collin,Texas; married John Samford, 29 Nov 1928, Brown Co.,Texas; died 18 Aug 1997, Hondo, Medina, Texas.
iv. Joseph Lee Hurst was born on 15 Mar 1914 in Brown, Texas. He served in the military during World War II. He died 6 July 1965 and is buried in Lovington, New Mexico.
